What is the significance of our lives? You and I? What happens, dear reader, after we die? We've seen it happen, don't lie to yourself, people will mourn, cry, and eventually, move on. So what was the point?

We live our lives centered around "I", what makes me happy, what do I enjoy? Isn't that the only factor in life? It's my life isn't it? I should enjoy every minute of it! I should experience whatever this earth has to offer, eat the best food, have the best relationships, indulge in every ephemeral morsel of joy humanity has to offer. And that is success isn't it? Only, was it worth it?
We invest almost our entire lives thinking about food, sleep, entertainment and then of course, the money to be able to level up the quality of the aforementioned activities. I mean, if everyone prioritized only their own 'happiness', the world would be exactly like it is now. Did we really come this far as an 'evolved' species to worry about the exact same things as we did as cavemen? I mean, where's the difference? Humanity, at least the general population, we're still basically struggling to survive, better. Nobody is even hoping to live! And what's even more frustrating about the entire situation is that the possibility of reaching something beyond the current pathetic state has been reduced to a pipe dream.

We were given the ability to think, communicate, cognate for a reason. While that reason may be up to interpretation, it was certainly not meant to be exploited for the progression of pleasure. Most religions advocate for the greater good of humanity, a power beyond the scope of our comprehension, a God. I don't believe in that, but what I do believe in is the inherent good in every human being. The power to distinguish right from wrong, the power of kindness, empathy, generosity, basic goodness.
To accept that you are a part of something bigger than yourself, bigger than your individual needs, desires, that you were somehow responsible for the massacres in Syria, when we realize that we were given the power to communicate to actually communicate and help each other reach for something more than ourselves, that is when I believe humanity will actually evolve as a species. The capacity to help someone by going outside our own comfort zones markers an inherent duty to help someone by going outside our comfort zones. Energy that does not accomplish work is useless, and worse, self destructive. The same goes for people. People that spend too much time wrapped up in their sense of self tend to cause harm not only to themselves, but those around them as well. In simpler words, selfishness, gluttony, greed, lust and their many cousins, all derive from the same root, prioritizing the "I" over the "We". And by this I imply, all of humanity.

To realize the significance of our lives, we should probably first accept just how insignificant we have been. We are not confined by our bodies, we aren't alive only so we may survive. We evolved over centuries of primal agony to develop the big wet spongy mass we call a brain. A brain to give us the capacity to think, to remember, emote, reason, and understand. Not a mind to be spent on wondering what to eat next, how to frame that hate comment, and how to not be bored, or grab attention so more people can follow us on media.
Humanity has a greater purpose, we have a greater purpose, only because we are capable of it.
